2008 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster

The 2008 V8 Vantage Roadster will be mechanically identical to its coupe twin but will have a powered soft-top.

Aston Martin gave a sneak peek of two exciting 2008 models — the DBS coupe and V8 Vantage Roadster — at a private event in October for 300 guests, including Aston Martin owners, prospective clients and dealers. Executives at the event would not release details on either car, such as pricing, sales volumes or specifications, but ForbesAutos.com was among the few members of the media on hand to snap some photographs.

A 2008 V8 Vantage Roadster was on display and drew attention from cocktail-sipping attendees. It features a powered, multilayer soft-top and is otherwise identical to the existing V8 Vantage coupe, said Geno Effler, brand communications manager for Aston Martin North America. He didn’t know whether it would weigh more or less than its solid-roofed sibling but said that it compromises nothing by way of performance and handling capabilities, and it will feature the same powertrain as the coupe.

Aston Martin design director Marek Reichman said that the V8 Vantage Roadster’s multihued red paint finish simulates looking into a fire’s orange, red and yellow flames: Depending on how the light hits it, the lustrous finish varies in color. A soft-top to was chosen instead of a folding metal hardtop as part of Aston Martin's minimalist design directive of having everything you need for a beautiful, exhilirating sports car and nothing more. "A folding hardtop is a luxury, not a necessity," Marek said.

Hottest Sports Cars for 2007

The 2007 model year showcases an especially diverse crop of new sports cars, ranging from $22,000 roadsters (Saturn Sky) to six-figure exotics (Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano).
While sports cars have continually improved and offer more thrills than ever before, modern ones remain style statements to many who buy them. This is especially true now that some sedans, wagons and even a handful of SUVs have performance and handling capabilities that far exceed those of past sports cars. New-for-2007 models are sure to please aesthetes (Bentley Continental GTC) and hardcore purists (Porsche 911 GT3) alike. And at least one — the Jaguar XK — is well-rounded enough to attract both types of enthusiasts: It has stunning looks, a lightweight, all-aluminum body, serious performance and coddling luxury.

Bentley Continental GTC

A sexy, new convertible version of Bentley's Continental GT features a soft fabric top that stows neatly under a leather-lined cover for a sleek top-down look. Bentley's usual impeccable interior treatment makes the Continental GTC's cabin a feast for the senses. And with a 552-hp W12 engine and all-wheel drive, it's sure to set the heart racing.

BMW Z4 Coupe

Based on the Z4 Roadster, the new Z4 Coupe appeals to sports- car purists who shun frou-frou convertibles yet value distinctive styling and practicality. The latter is thanks to a decent trunk, comfortable seats and good gas mileage from the car's 255-hp 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. A six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic with shift paddles on the steering wheel are both available.

BMW Z4 M Coupe

The Z4 M Coupe is a higher-performance version of the standard Z4 Coupe and complements the Z4 M Roadster, which debuted for 2006. Like its ragtop twin, the M Coupe features the same 330-hp 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine as the vaunted M3, along with styling tweaks, a stiffer suspension, retuned steering system and other performance upgrades.

Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano

The 599 GTB Fiorano is the latest in a long line of front-engine 12-cylinder Ferraris. Its 620-hp 6.0-liter V12 makes the 599 GTB the most powerful street-legal Ferrari ever — good for a sprint to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph, Ferrari says. Italian design house Pininfarina designed the aluminum body. It will be the first Ferrari to feature a self-adjusting suspension that uses magnetic currents to vary damping rates.

Jaguar XK/XKR

Jaguar's flashy and fast XK coupe and convertible are overdue but worthy replacements for the aging XK8. They offer a roomier, higher-quality interior, a more rigid body and improved powertrains. A 300-hp 4.2-liter V8 and six-speed automatic transmission are standard. The higher-performance XKR versions upgrade to a 420-hp, supercharged V8 and a stiffer suspension.

Lamborghini Murciélago LP640

Lamborghini takes its exotic, $350,000 Murciélago supercar even further over the top with a thoroughly reworked 640-hp 6.5-liter V12 engine, a retuned suspension and modified looks. The term "LP640" has been added to the name to denote the engine output and its longitudinal, rear position in the chassis (logitudinale posteriore, in Italian). A slick sequential-manual transmission and standard six-speed are available. Transparent glass panels showcase the engine for an added $7,200.

Pontiac Solstice GXP

The svelte Solstice gains a higher-output GXP variant for 2007. Its 260-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine offers nearly twice as much as power as the engine in the base model. A sport suspension, limited-slip rear differential, styling tweaks and various other performance improvements complete the package and transform the Solstice from a fun roadster into a serious sports car.

Porsche 911 GT3

Based on the 911 GT3 RSR race car, the $106,000 911 GT3 brings racing technology to the street. A special version of Porsche's 3.6-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine produces 415 hp with a redline bumped up to 8,400 rpms. The six-speed transmission and suspension have been modified for all-out performance. Beginning next spring, an even more extreme GT3 RS will feature carbon-fiber components for reduced weight.

Porsche 911 Targa

The new 911 Targa offers open-air motoring without compromising structural integrity thanks to its sliding glass roof panel. The car will initially be offered with all-wheel drive as the Targa 4 and 4S. The former will feature the 325-hp 3.6-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, and the latter will come with a 355-hp 3.8-liter version.

Porsche 911 Turbo

Despite being larger and more powerful than the car it replaces, the all-new 911 Turbo weighs 90 pounds less. It again features all-wheel drive for power delivery. It's 3.6-liter boxer six-cylinder engine features variable-geometry turbochargers that boost output to 473 hp and 502 pound-feet of torque. Porsche claims a top speed of 193 mph and a zero-to-60-mph time of less than four seconds.

Saturn Sky

The sprightly Saturn Sky is a slightly better equipped and restyled version of General Motors' Pontiac Solstice. It features the same 177-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine in base form and a 260-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in a hotter Red Line version that should sprint to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds. Value is perhaps the best selling point for the Sky; with a starting price under $25,000, you don't have to spend a lot to get plenty of open-air thrills.

The Chevrolet Volt concept was awarded the 2007 North American Specialty Concept Vehicle of the Year and the Most Significant Concept Vehicle of the Year at an awards ceremony at the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn. The Holden EFIJY won the 2007 North American Concept Car of the Year Award.

Organized by the South East Automotive Media Organization (SEAMO), the sixth annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards recognize those vehicles most likely to shape the future of the automobile industry. Bob Boniface, director, GM advanced design, and Chevrolet Volt lead designer, accepted the awards on behalf of GM.
"We appreciate this recognition from such a prestigious group of automotive journalists," said Boniface. "The Volt is an important vehicle for GM and for the world. Whether your concern is energy security, CO2 emissions or reducing our dependence on oil, it all leads to energy diversity. GM wants to be a part of the solution, that's why we designed the Chevrolet Volt concept."
A jury consisting of professional automotive journalists selected the winners from 33 concept vehicles and 11 production preview vehicles that made a North American debut during the 2007 auto show season.
The Chevrolet Volt Concept, revealed at the North American International Auto Show in January, is GM's new electric vehicle concept. The concept car is a battery-powered electric vehicle that uses a gas engine to create additional electricity to extend its range. GM announced a fuel cell variant of the Volt concept at the 2007 Shanghai Motor Show in April.

Saab 9-5 SportCombi Review

First impressions last. Or in this case, first. Anyway, the slightly-new-for-‘06 (but mostly unchanged since ‘99) Saab 9-5 SportCombi misses the mark at first glance. GM's Swedish division crafted a wagon that looks like a slightly larger Saab 9-3, only uglier. The SportCombi's low greenhouse, swoopy rear windows and huge up-curving C-pillars combine all the worst elements of a ‘00 Saturn SW wagon and a Cadillac SRX. The design says "We wanted to make a wagon, but we only had enough cash for a car-camper shell." Volvo continues to master Skandinavisk chic. Saab goes for cheap chic– and fails. Sigh. The General bought Saab in the early '90's to create "premium vehicles;" the 9-5 moniker is a throw-down to BMW's 5-Series. Step inside the SportCombi and you'll understand why the Germans and Japanese only have each other to worry about. From tacky vinyl sun visors, to an economy class "jet inspired" reading lamp, to plastics that are more B210 than BMW, all the SportCombi's beans have been carefully counted.
That said, the 9-5 SportCombi's freshened dash is suitably swish. The car's cockpit finally ditches the million button layout for a tasteful array of modern gauges (including the signature turbo gauge) and decent HVAC controls. Saab ergonomicists spent design time on what drivers touch most: the steering wheel. Regular and perforated cow combine to form a tasteful tiller– albeit swizzle stick thin with freakishly shaped grips reminiscent of Ross Perot's head.

Saab's blessed the base SportCombi with an attractive, fine sounding, easy-to-use audio system. Customers crazy enough willing to lay down $2,945 for the satnav are not so lucky. The system may look at home in a Chevy Trailblazer, but the vast sheet of plastic surrounding the small screen and the ugly rectangular holes are, well, horrible. It's not as ghastly as the wimpy foldout front cup holder, but close.

Below the dash, the bargain-basement mentality returns. The gigantic buttons to the driver's left don't match those on the center console for size, shape or feedback. There's only one set of window switches and one door lock button, positioned in the middle of the car. The rubber coin holder and the ignition key housing in the center console are catchpenny haptic horrors, while the SportCombi's door panels are a riot of low-budget plastics and mismatched coloring.
While your money buys you a whole load of load-lugging, the unrefined feel and design of the SportCombi's major switchgear and minor do-dads are simply not appropriate for a car stickering between $36k and $45k (or a lot less with the inevitable discounts). Oh, and last year, JD Power's mob rated Saab's reliability second to last. So not only does the SportCombi feel cheap, it breaks like it too.

Audi RS4 is 2007 World Performance Car

At a press conference presented by the MIDWAY GROUP and hosted by the New York International Auto Show at the Jacob Javitz Centre in Manhattan, New York, the Audi RS4 was declared the 2007 World Performance Car.

The Audi RS4 was chosen from an initial entry list of seventeen (17) contenders nominated by World Car jurors from 22 countries throughout the world.

While the winner of the overall World Car of the Year award must excel in a broad range of attributes, there is a segment of the car-buying public for whom performance - in its broadest sense - overrides all other priorities. Vehicles appealing to that clientele may be too narrowly focused to appeal to the masses, but it is an important element in the overall automotive mix. It is for that reason that we created the World Performance Car award in 2005.

Candidates for the World Performance Car award must demonstrate a specific and overt Sports/Performance orientation. They must also satisfy the same availability criteria as for the overall award and may be chosen from that list of eligible vehicles.

Additional entrants may include newly introduced variants that satisfy the same criteria, but are derived from existing rather than brand-new models. In all cases, they must have a minimum annual production rate of 1000 vehicles.

The jurors voted in January 2007 in order to establish a top ten shortlist. The 2007 World Performance Car was chosen from those finalists as tabulated by the international accounting firm KPMG.

WCOTY's jurors loved the RS4, which is the virtual definition of a sports sedan. With its quattro all-wheel-drive system it puts its 420 high-tech horsepower to the ground with confidence, and it can be tossed around an obstacle course with abandon. The Audi build quality is beyond reproach and for all its high-performance capability, the RS4 can be absolutely docile when that is what is called for, making it a true dual-purpose car, suitable for everyday family use as well as track days. The very best part, however, is the wonderful roar it emits when you put your right foot down.

The top three contenders for the third annual World Performance Car in addition to the Audi RS4 were the BMW 335i and the Porsche 911 Turbo.

"We are honoured to receive the World Performance Car of the Year award for the Audi RS 4," said Johan De Nysschen, Executive Vice President of Audi of America, on accepting the award. 2008 BMW 6-series face-lift

BMW have released details and pictures of their face-lifted 6-series coupe/cabriolet which is scheduled to be publicly unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Most of the changes in the face-lift appear on the surface of the car including redesigned bumpers, LED indicators and a more prominent rear spoiler incorporated into the bootlid which now also features the repositioned third brake-light.

A new diesel engine makes its way into the model line-up in the 635d boasting good economy in a combined fuel consumption figure of 6.9 Liters/100 km. The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight six diesel engine delivers 210kW (286hp) and a maximum torque of 580Nm - enough for a time of 6.3 seconds in the 0-100 km/h sprint.

The section of the luggage compartment lid beneath the spoiler lip is even more concave in design than before, rising up less steeply to provide not only a more dynamic look, but also more distinctive light/shade contrasts, making the entire rear end of the car look even lower and more dynamic.

On both the Coupe and Convertible, the additional brake light is now integrated in the spoiler lip. The inner structure of the rear lights has also been modified to reflect the new lines of the car, with all light sources now being LED units.

The harmony of lines on the luggage compartment lid, the rear lights and reflectors is likewise more intense and striking than before, the line formed by the lower edge of the rear spoiler sweeping gently downwards, where it is taken up by the outer contour of the rear lights. Then, following the design of the lights, the spoiler line, while still moving down, sweeps to the inside, where it is taken up by the contour of the low, even more stretched-out and sleeker reflectors.

BMW 6 Series all the way: harmony of design outside and inside.

The stylish and elegant dynamism of the car’s exterior design continues smoothly and harmoniously within the interior of the BMW 6 Series. Bearing a clear analogy to the exterior design of the car, the concept of dynamic harmony forms clear, flowing lines and tense, muscular surfaces. As an example, the sweeping cover above the dashboard starting beneath the windscreen extends back on both sides in an ongoing, dynamic line leading into the door panels and surrounding the armrests. Both the driver and front passenger are therefore enveloped by tense, even exciting design elements continuing all the way to the center console between the rear seats, thus emphasizing both the sophisticated style and elegance of the interior in a genuine visual and tangible experience.

The unique nature of the new BMW 6 Series is enhanced by appropriate refinements in the quality of materials on specific controls and instruments finished in new Chrome Pearl Grey Design as well as new colors for the interior trim and upholstery.

Unparalleled supremacy: the eight-cylinder in the BMW 6 Series.

Once again, the eight-cylinder power unit in the new BMW 6 Series marks the pinnacle in superior power and performance. The 4.8-liter engine develops maximum output of 360 hp at an engine speed of 6,300 rpm, with peak torque of 360 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm.

This cutting-edge aluminium power unit features throttle-free VALVETRONIC valve control, variable double-VANOS camshaft management on the intake and exhaust side, as well as an intake manifold switching to two different settings. Benefiting from these highlights in technology, the eight-cylinder offers superior smoothness and refinement, an immediate and direct response, and a truly powerful torque curve.

The new BMW 650i Coupe accelerates to 60 miles per hour in 5.3 seconds (with manual transmission) while the BMW 650i Convertible completes the same exercise in 5.6 seconds. Engine management, in turn, limits the top speed of both models to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Fuel economy and emissions optimized on all models.

A wide range of fuel-saving features in and around the engine also serve to make all of the power unit in the new BMW 6 Series even more efficient. One example is the Varioserv steering assistance pump that ensures particularly efficient steering support and assistance according to the driver’s current requirements.

Further new technologies serving to save fuel provide their superior effect without any intervention by the driver. The belt drive for the a/c compressor, for example, comes with its own clutch automatically disconnecting the compressor as soon as the driver switches off the air conditioning.

New automatic sports transmission and shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Engine power on the new BMW 650i is transmitted to the rear wheels in standard trim by a six-speed manual gearbox. Optionally available, at no charge, is BMW's newly developed six-speed Sports Automatic transmission, combining supreme comfort with extremely fast reaction and gearshift times in genuine Grand Touring style. Further advantages are the direct connection of the automatic transmission to the engine and, as a result, dynamic conversion of engine power into driving pleasure and performance.

The driver controls the Sport Automatic by means of an electronic gear selector lever, moving the lever briefly to the left from position D in order to activate the manual gearshift mode. This allows the driver to shift gears either via the gear selector lever or manually in sequential mode by means of paddles on the steering wheel. A further option is to shift gears manually directly from the paddles. Pressing the Sports button positioned behind the gear selector lever, the driver is able to enjoy an even faster and dynamic gearshift. A further benefit is that the Sports button also modifies the progressive action of the gas pedal and, in conjunction with the car’s standard steering, the Servotronic control map, providing optimum conditions for dynamic acceleration.

All-aluminum suspension for enhanced agility, safety and comfort.

Both the BMW 6 Series Coupe and the Convertible are characterized by sporting and superior driving characteristics at all times and under all conditions. Featuring a high-performance power unit, rear-wheel drive, excellent axle load distribution, and an ultra-modern all-aluminum suspension, the BMW 6 Series offers a supreme driving experience under all conditions. The principle of lightweight construction on the chassis and suspension, in turn, guarantees supreme stability on low weight and minimizes the car’s unsprung masses.

The high-performance floating-caliper brakes with inner-vented brake discs are controlled hydraulically on the BMW 6 Series, now acting even faster and more precisely than before in guaranteeing maximum stability and full brake power at all times.

Dynamic Stability Control with optimized control action.

Offering a wide range of functions, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) supports the driver in the process of handling his BMW safely and with superior style. First and foremost, DSC can apply the brakes individually on the car’s various wheels as required, or intervene in engine management in order to counteract any over- or understeer in bends.

DSC also includes the ABS anti-lock brake control system as well as Automatic Stability Control, which helps prevent the drive wheels from spinning on loose or slippery ground, as well as Brake Assist, and Cornering Brake Control to help avoid under- or oversteer in bends.

Further functions include Brake Fade Compensation when the brakes become particularly hot, Brake Drying to optimize the car’s stopping power in wet weather, and Start-Off Assistant, enabling the driver to set off smoothly and without the car rolling back on an uphill gradient, without having to use the handbrake.

A further innovation is Brake Standby, whose pre-loading brake function moves the brake pads closer to the discs for immediate build-up of brake pressure, thus avoiding the slightest delay in the process of applying the brakes. In the event of an emergency braking maneuver, this precaution enables the brakes to build up their maximum stopping power much faster than usual, making stopping distances shorter and offering valuable safety reserves.

The Brake Assistant in the new BMW 6 Series, part of the DSC control system, is networked with the car’s other driver assistance systems, interacting with the optional Active Cruise Control with its Stop & Go function in order to detect the need for extra stopping power in good time. This is done by radar sensors incorporated in the system, with the brakes being pre-loaded by reducing the normal activation thresholds on the hydraulic Brake Assistant.

Activated at the touch of a button, Dynamic Traction Control serves to raise the DSC response threshold for even more dynamic performance. Specially optimized in the new BMW 6 Series, this DTC mode enhances traction on slippery surfaces and ensures an even higher standard of sporting performance under dynamic driving conditions.

Unique: Active Steering and Active Roll Stabilization.

Standard on the BMW 6 Series, Servotronic power steering provides appropriate assistance on the hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering as a function of road speed. Further enhancement of steering comfort is provided by optionally available Active Steering, unique in the 6 Series segment, varying the steering ratio appropriately to provide a larger steering angle at low speeds with the same movement of the steering wheel than at higher speeds. In practice, this allows the driver to maneuver the car with less effort and with an even smoother steering effect. At higher speeds, Active Steering makes it easier for the driver to remain steadily on course, harmonizing the feeling of the steering.

By way of yaw rate control, Active Steering stabilizes the car when applying the brakes on surfaces with different traction levels side-to-side, counter-steering as required for superior safety and balance.

Another innovation reflecting the character of the BMW 6 Series is Active Roll Stabilization. This suspension control system features active anti-roll bars with hydraulic swivel motors on the front and rear axle, enabling the car to almost completely eliminate body roll movements in bends and in a sudden change of direction. A further benefit is appropriate control of the car’s steering behavior in a lane change or in hard maneuvers serving to avoid an obstacle on the road.

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go.

Active Cruise Control with its Stop & Go function offers the driver better support and greater assistance at the wheel than ever before. This innovative system now available as an option in the new BMW 6 Series – on models with automatic transmission – features automatic distance control, allowing the driver to comfortably cruise along the highway or on a country road as well as in stop-and-go traffic at very low speeds, while constantly maintaining an appropriate distance to the vehicle ahead.

As soon as the distance pre-set by the driver can no longer be maintained, the system adjusts the speed of the car by intervening in drive management and building up brake pressure, thus taking current traffic conditions into account. Then, as soon as the road ahead is free again, Active Cruise Control increases the speed of the car to the limit set by the driver. The system even reduces the speed of the car to a standstill whenever necessary based on current traffic conditions, bringing the car to a halt and holding it in that position.

The maximum deceleration generated by Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is 0.5g. And should the driver be required to intervene because the vehicle ahead is applying the brakes extremely hard, he will be alerted to do so by appropriate visual and acoustic signals.

New: Lane Departure Warning with vibration signal on the steering wheel.

To support driver awareness, both the new BMW 6 Series Coupe and the new BMW 6 Series Convertible are available with a newly developed assistance system helping to prevent the driver from inadvertently departing from the correct lane on the road. Referred to as Lane Departure Warning, this sophisticated system identifies movement of the car from the correct lane and gives the driver a discreet but noticeable signal at the most important point in steering the car – on the steering wheel itself.

The Lane Departure Warning System is made up of a camera fitted near the interior mirror on the windscreen, a control unit for comparing data, and a signal transmitter generating a vibration signal on the steering wheel.

BMW Night Vision

BMW Night Vision, available as an option, offers a higher level of safety when driving at night. The “heart” of this unique system is a thermal imaging camera able to detect people, animals and objects emitting heat at a distance of up to almost 1,000 feet down the road, then transmitting a high-contrast image to the central Control Display also used by the navigation system.

Head-Up Display

As an option, both the BMW 6 Series Coupe and the BMW 6 Series Convertible are available with a Head-Up Display projecting information relevant to the driver such as the road speed of the car or navigation data to the windscreen directly in front of the driver.

Comfort and safety on all four seats.

High-strength load-bearing structures, generous and clearly defined deformation zones front and rear, side impact protection integrated in the doors and rear side panels, and an extremely stiff passenger cell allowing the entire structure around the driver to maintain its function as a survival area in a severe collision – all these features provide the prerequisites for the exemplary standard of passive safety offered by the BMW 6 Series.

Other standard features are three-point seat belts with pretensioners on all seats as well as front and side airbags for the front occupants. The BMW 6 Series Coupe also comes with head airbags, while the BMW 6 Series Convertible features rollbars which move up automatically in the event of a possible rollover within fractions of a second from behind the rear headrests.

Active headrests for an even higher standard of occupant protection.

Both the BMW 6 Series Coupe and the BMW 6 Series Convertible come as standard with electrically adjustable seats for the driver and front passenger as well as a triple memory function on the driver’s seat. The front seats on the BMW 6 Series Convertible feature an integrated belt system, while on the BMW 6 Series Coupe the belt anchor points allow comfortable and convenient use of the car’s restraint systems.

Newly developed active headrests on the front seats once again enhance the standard of passive safety in both models, the headrests developing their protective effect in the event of a rear-end collision by automatically moving closer to the occupant’s head, thus preventing any rapid spinning or turning motion of the head, in the process significantly reducing the risk of upper spinal injury for the driver and front passenger.

To ensure this effect, the headrests are moved forward by 60 millimeters or 2.36´´ and upward by 40 millimeters or 1.57´´ as soon as the airbag control unit registers an impact at the rear of the BMW 6 Series and sends out a signal for pyrotechnical activation of the system. This, in turn, releases two springs moving the upholstered sections of the headrests into position to immediately cushion the heads of the occupants, preventing any spinning or jerking movement resulting from impact energy.

Top-end navigation and audio systems.

As a particular highlight in the interest of motoring comfort, both the BMW 6 Series Coupe and the BMW 6 Series Convertible are equipped with the BMW Navigation System, including Real Time Traffic Information. Among other features, the BMW Navigation System features refined graphic presentation on an 8.8-inch Control Display as well as new, particularly reliable voice entry exclusive to BMW cars.

High-quality audio systems and telematics functions serve to enhance touring comfort and driving pleasure in the new BMW 6 Series. BMW’s optional Premium Sound Package continues to include a 6 disc CD changer and Logic 7 and adds a USB interface is also available as an option for linking up external audio sources. This allows the user to integrate MP3 players such as an Apple iPod into the audio system and to control the various functions by means of the iDrive Controller or the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel.

The range of multi-media features and options is rounded off by BMW Assist telematics services including TeleService, which enables customers to make service appointments with their BMW center.

Leather upholstery with SunReflective Technology on the Convertible.

One of the particular highlights offered by the BMW 6 Series Convertible is the use of a newly developed type of leather for the seat upholstery and interior panels. In this case, so-called “cool pigments” are integrated into the material in a process referred to as SunReflective Technology, reflecting infra-red radiation in the sunlight. This very effectively reduces undue overheating of the seat surfaces when the car is open, providing a difference in temperatures compared with conventional leather of up to 36 °F in the case of dark colors.

STEP 0! - Face Lift!Before you go into any modifications, you may want to start to facelift your BMW to the latest specifications according to your car series. Check out what type of face lifts are available for your car… You may consider white indicators, new grille, new badge etc.
STEP 1 - Colour-Code BumpersThe first step to creating an attractive BMW is to colour-code your bumper/spoiler for cars that do not come with colour-coded bumpers as standard. Colour-coded bumpers make the car look fuller, lower and much more pleasing to the eye. There is nothing less attractive than a BMW with such attractive colours but has a grey underside (bumpers). Especially if you have a light colour car, you will find huge improvements to the look of your car just by colour-coding your bumpers. However, if you are thinking of changing your spoilers in the very near future, skip this step to save you the cost of painting. STEP 4 - Alloy WheelsAlloy wheels are certainly the most visual changes you will find on any car. It will change the whole look of your BMW. The only reason it is in step four is because there is no point having large alloys that sits high above the ground. Different types of wheels will create a different look. Personally, I think five-spokes alloys look best. It provides both better cooling for the brakes as well as showing off your brake discs (if you fit large ones). Some people judges the performance of your car by the size of your brake discs as you need them to stop your fast BMW car! Fitting larger alloys enable you to fit wider tyres for better grip. 2007 Mercedes-Benz CL 550: Two Door Supremacy

When Mercedes-Benz decided to redesign their CL-Class of cars, I took a long breath and wondered out loud. "How can they improve a perfect design?" came the echoes from deep within. The last CL I'd driven was the CL 65 AMG, with its hand built twin-turbo, 6.0 liter V12 that poured out 604 horsepower and a whopping 738 pound feet of torque. At $180,000 and some change, it was a bargain considering its supercar performance. So the bar was set real high when I got the opportunity to drive the all-new CL-Class.

The new model is based on the successful redesign of the S-Class, Mercedes' flagship sedan. It's a more brutish design than the svelte, rounded CL it replaces, but it works well. At 199 inches of overall length, the new CL is only six inches shorter than the S-Class. This is a big car. My tester was the CL550.

Outside, the CL's rounded roofline remains. It starts from the "A" pillar with a slight bow upwards, then drops off rather quickly as it flows into the trunkline. Two sculpted ridges have been incorporated into the beltline - one high and one low, which gives the doors and rear quarter visual depth. Side skirts carry all the way into the rear bumper, which help to provide a ground effects look. Dual chromed exhausts are enclosed in a rear finisher panel, and the rear quarter panels have power indentations that remind you of a sculpted athlete's powerful glutes. The real change comes in the huge fender flares both front and rear that give the CL a hulking image. The flares work on this car because Mercedes has wisely filled the wheel wells with staggered width 18" wheels on performance rubber. From the front, headlights that wrap around into the front fenders and a subtle chin spoiler compliment the traditional chrome slat grille and three-pointed star. This is a beautiful work of art.

Step inside the new CL, and you are treated with Rock Star luxury. This is a pillarless coupe, so entry front or rear is easy, particularly the rear seats as the CL's front seats automatically move forward once a chromed latch is lifted. Up front, the broad, burled wood (other finishes available) center console is dominant. On the lower console is Mercedes' Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) controller, which is light years easier to use than BMW's I-Drive controller. A dedicated phone keypad (nicely covered in wood) rests just above the COMAND controller. Just in front of the COMAND controller are four direct access buttons for the most common controls a driver normally uses - the audio system, telephone and navigation, and some specialized seat controls. To the left and right of the COMAND controller are buttons to change suspension damping, control audio volume, raise or drop rear headrests, and a "favorites" button that can be programmed to control a function not already listed. Moving upwards, there's a row of direct access HVAC buttons (redundant buttons as you can also control HVAC via COMAND). Just above these buttons is a gorgeous analog clock that's easily read from all seating positions. Above the clock is the COMAND display screen which also has a unique feature. You can adjust it so that it is canted towards you the driver, or you can electronically swivel it to share with passengers (trust me, they will want to join in the fun).

Winners & Losers at the L.A. Auto Show: Production Cars

There were some wild concept cars here at the L.A. Auto Show, but it’s the production cars that have the most impact on everyday car buyers. The models we saw are on sale now or will be next year, and some of them are extremely important to their makers’ bottom line. Mike Hanley and David Thomas took some time to dissect the winners and losers — plus a few cars they couldn’t agree on — in this photo blog.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster
DT - Winner: Pure sensuality in this British roadster. Though it’s more exotic than the Audi R8, I still prefer the German car. I wouldn’t turn down a ride in this, though; it turns heads standing still.

MH - Winner: You really have to see this car in person to appreciate its perfect proportions and sleek profile, so if you live near L.A., stop on by the convention center; I give it the nod for best in show.

Saturn Vue
DT - Winner: Definitely the big winner of the production cars. Compact SUVs are a hot segment, and this is the best of the new wave of GM products I’ve seen. The interior actually holds up to glowing press shots.

MH - Winner: With an attractive exterior, premium interior and wide range of powertrains (including a hybrid system), the 2008 Vue is well-positioned to challenge segment leaders like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Nissan Altima Coupe
DT - Winner: This one was a surprise and is a looker. Without driving the thing, it already looks head and shoulders above the Toyota Camry Solara and the Honda Accord and Pontiac G6 coupes.

MH - Winner: Nissan definitely did a good job differentiating this model from the sedan, and the interior looks pretty nice, too. This is the car for those who love the lines of the Infiniti G35 coupe but can’t stomach its $30,000-plus price tag.

Subaru Impreza goes on sale in Japan

The new Subaru Impreza range

The all-new 2008 Subaru Impreza has gone on sale in Japan and will be available in three models: the 15S (1.5-litre DOHC), 20S (2.0-litre SOHC) and S-GT (2.0-litre turbo).

In a surprise move by Subaru, the WRX moniker has been dropped in favour of S-GT although Australia and other markets are unlikely to adopt this name-change.

Under the bonnet with the S-GT packing a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that produces 180 kW (250 hp). This will be different to the mill destined for Australia which will have greater displacement (2.5-litre) but less power (around 169kW).

Considering the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) have always featured a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine for both the WRX and STi versions while international markets had 2.5-litre mills, this announcement wasn't entirely surprising.

2008 Ford Shelby GT Coupe & Convertible - Official

Another day, another version; a cliché phrase that fits Mustangs like a glove. Today we have the 2008 Shelby GT that succeeds the 2007 Shelby GT (retail version of The Hertz Corporation Shelby GT-H coupe). Unlike the ‘07 GT that was offered exclusively with a coupe body, the 2008 model will also be available as a convertible. Apart from that, the only other significant difference has to do with the exterior paint job. While the ’07 GTs were offered in Performance White or Black the ‘08 versions will be available in a new paint combination of Vista Blue with Silver stripes. There are no changes under the hood as the ’08 GT continues using the tweaked 319Hp 4.6 V8. Approximately 2,300 2008 Shelby GT coupes and convertibles will be built -a number significantly lower than the 6.000 units of the ’07 model, with sales staring this August. Prices will be announced at a later date.

Ford confirms review of Jaguar and Rover

Ford is reviewing its position on Jaguar and Land Rover amid reports that the two brands were up for sale.

Ford Motor Co said it was reviewing its position on Jaguar and Land Rover, and union officials pressed for more information amid reports that the two brands were up for sale.
John Gardiner, a spokesman for Ford's Premier Automotive Group, said Ford had been reviewing all of its operations for a year.
"We are working with our financial advisers on the best options for Jaguar and Land Rover, and nothing is ruled out," Gardiner said. He added that there was no time frame for making a decision.
Prime Minister Tony Blair's office said it was in touch with Ford about the review."We still believe that both Land Rover and Jaguar are highly successful companies and will have a highly successful future," said the prime minister's official spokesman said.
British lawmaker Lorely Burt, who represents Solihull, home to Land Rover's assembly plant, said legislators were told Monday night that Ford was "looking at all the options which may or may not include a sale."
"We are very concerned to hear these reports and we are seeking an urgent meeting with Jaguar/Land Rover," said Dave Osborne, national officer of the Unite union.
"We find it difficult to understand why Ford would want to sell a successful, growing and environmentally improving brand like Land Rover, and a marque like Jaguar, which is a significant player in the luxury market and one that Ford has invested heavily in."
Land Rover and Jaguar are part of Ford's Premier Auto Group, which also includes Volvo. Ford sold Aston Martin, another part of the group, for $US848 million ($A1 billion) in March, with some analysts saying the luxury brand did not fit into Ford's long-term survival plan for cost savings from developing multiple models worldwide on the same underpinnings.
Ford, which is struggling to be profitable in the face of fierce competition from Asian automakers, posted a sharply narrower first-quarter net loss in April of $US282 million ($A334.94 million). The Premier Automotive Group reported a record pretax profit of $US402 million ($A477.4 million) for the quarter due largely to Volvo.
Ford bought Jaguar in 1989 and Land Rover in 2000. The two business have about 19,000 employees in Britain.
Geoffrey Robinson, a legislator representing Jaguar's base in Coventry, said speculation about a sale was "was not news in the sense that ... it was announced some time ago that they would be looking to do this."
"It seems to have moved on a whole gear now that they do have certain groups earmarked who might go forward and make specific bids," Robinson told BBC radio.
"Ford have got some huge problems on their own, really huge facing survival really on their hands. They actually don't have the management capability, never really had it, to make a success of Jaguar.
